Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Characterised by persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) performed in response to the obsessions.

Do recurring thoughts persistently fill your mind, defying your efforts to dismiss them? Are certain behaviours or routines taking precedence in your daily life, making it difficult to unwind without their completion? If these scenarios resonate with you, you might be encountering symptoms linked to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, known as OCD.

Left untreated, OCD can significantly impact various aspects of life, becoming increasingly debilitating. The disorder encompasses two primary elements – obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions involve intrusive thoughts, images, urges, or beliefs persisting in the mind despite efforts to resist or eliminate them. Compulsions are subsequent behaviours or acts that provide temporary relief from obsessive thoughts but, concurrently, hinder one's ability to function effectively.

Common obsessions may include:

  • Fear of contamination

  • Fear of losing control of behaviour

  • Uncontrollable sexually explicit or violent thoughts

  • Using alcohol or drugs to manage anger

However, the range of obsessive thoughts and behaviours is extensive. If you find any belief or behaviour negatively impacting your life or those close to you, seeking professional support is crucial.

Our psychologists are equipped to guide you through understanding and managing OCD at your own pace. Some ways we can assist include, but are not limited to:

  • Identifying Origins and Challenging Thoughts:

    • Analysing the roots of obsessive thoughts and challenging them to minimise their impact.

  • Gradual Belief Testing:

    • Systematically testing beliefs in small, incremental steps to alleviate associated anxiety.

  • Relaxation Training:

    • Providing techniques for relaxation to manage heightened anxiety associated with obsessions.

  • Building Social Support and Recreational Activities:

    • Enhancing social connections and engaging in recreational activities to address concerns beyond scheduled sessions.

Don't navigate OCD alone any longer. Find a psychologist for you that can offer support, education on OCD, and tailored strategies to empower you in overcoming its challenges.

Frequently ask questions

How will I know the therapy is working for me?

It will not always be obvious and it could be gradual. But when you start feeling better, then that means that the therapy is working.

You'll also be able to see things more clearly as you progress with your talk therapy. Healing, however, is not always so clear-cut. There will always be ups and downs. If that happens, you can talk to your psychologist about your progress and be open with what you're feeling.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

There are many studies proving online and face-to-face therapy are equally as effective.

Yes. Studies (like this one) have shown online therapy is just as effective as face to face. Similarly, research (like this one) demonstrates the importance of being able to quickly access care when needed.

Are all your psychologists registered?

Australia has regulatory bodies to ensure we maintain consistent and high standards across the psychology profession.

Yes. They are registered with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA), listed with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and individually selected and monitored by Someone.health's expert clinical team.

How long does it take to see a psychologist?

Appointments are available immediately

Once you have signed up and we have verified your details, you can choose a psychologist who is available immediately. Our website displays in order of the first available appointment.

Can a psychologist prescribe medication?

Only your GP or a psychiatrist can prescribe medication.

Medication can only be prescribed by medical doctors, which includes general practitioners (GPs) and psychiatrists.

If you need the services of a psychiatrist, please visit Call To Mind, a telehealth service specialising in psychiatry.
