What is a referral and an MHTP? Do I need them before booking an appointment?
Yes. We need a GP referral letter and a Mental Health Treatment Plan for Medicare to fund your appointment.
There are two documents we need from your GP:
- A referral letter from your GP
- A copy of the Mental Health Treatment Plan your GP has created with you
You'll be asked to upload your GP referral when you book. If it isn't ready yet, you can still book and upload it later, but we need an approved referral at least 24 hours before your appointment. Otherwise you may be charged the private session fee. Your MHTP can be uploaded any time before your appointment.
What is a referral letter?

A referral letter is usually a one-page letter from your GP to a psychologist, asking them to provide therapy for you.
Your referral letter needs to include the number of sessions your GP is referring you for and the reason for seeking treatment (such as depression or anxiety).
Your referral letter doesn't need to be addressed to Someone.health or a specific psychologist. As long as it's addressed to a psychologist, you can use it with Someone.health.
What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?
An MHTP is a document your GP prepares with you. It includes your personal information, emergency contact details, a risk assessment, results from an assessment like a K10 or DASS-21, and your goals for treatment.
It's usually several pages long, and we need a copy of every page.
You can view a sample MHTP here (opens in a new tab). Every GP practice uses a slightly different template, so yours may look different but should contain the same information.
